Learn how to use word sorts when teaching phonics

To do this activity for teaching phonics:

  • Come up with a list of words that contain common phonemes and phonograms. In other words, words that contain similar assortments of letters. For example, come up with words that begin with "st, br, or ch" or maybe words that contain "ee, ea, er, or ing".
  • Create a piece of paper that contains all of these words (at least 20).
  • Add some questions to that like, "How many words _____ (contain, start with, or end with) the letters "ee, er, ing, st, etc."
  • Make copies of them and hand them out to your students to complete.
